Because… Why not? I couldn’t think of another topic & was in the mood to do a top ten! Johnny Depp used to be my favorite actor by far. Unfortunately, he’s been in a lot of bad movies in recent years. 😦
Anyway – here are My Top Ten Johnny Depp Movies, counting down from ten. (Ranked by favorite film, not role):
10. TIE: Blow & Freddy’s Dead: The Final Nightmare (does that one count?)
9. Pirates Of The Caribbean: The Curse Of The Black Pearl
6. Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber Of Fleet Street
5. What’s Eating Gilbert Grape
**Edit to add:
I did like Platoon and it would make this list if I could actually remember Johnny in it! It was a very small role, right?
Also want to give a shout out to one of my favorite TV shows ever: 21 Jump Street. I know Johnny grew to hate being in that show but I loved it! No, I’ve not seen that movie that doesn’t appear to have anything in common with the TV show…
And, before you all ask: No, I’ve not seen Fear And Loathing In Las Vegas. 😉
Excellent list lady! I LOVE Johnny Depp in Donnie Brasco, fine film that it was. I do enjoy Depp a lot, must agree. We’ll give you Freddy’s Dead 😛
Thanks! : ) I loved him more in the 80s & 90s…. Hoping he’ll go back to making better films.
Yeah, hoping Transcendence brings more to the table than recent works… 😦
Blow, What’s Eating Gilbert Grape, Benny and Joon, Sweeney Todd, and Desperado are mine. Nice list!
Thanks! : ) I still need to see Desperado…
I would have Benny and Joon number 1, I think. By far. Scissorhands would be my number 2 and Gilbert Grape number 3.
Sweeney Todd and Corpse Bride wouldn’t make my list. 🙂 I think Chocolat and Finding Neverland would probably replace them.
Anyway, good list. Made for a fun read.
Thanks! : ) I’ve not seen Chocolat but considered Finding Neverland as an honorable mention.
Depp isn’t the featured player in Chocolat (Binoche is, followed by Judi Dench and Alfred Molina), but the film is great. And Depp, as a supporting player, shows some emotional depth and nuanced understatement. It is one of my favorite of his performances, because it shows off a certain range. I definitely recommend the flick.
I’ll watch it someday. : ) It’s been on my to watch list for years!
I totally forgot he’s in Fear & Loathing in Las Vegas. I HATE that film. And I’ve seen it three times to make sure that I just wasn’t in the wrong mood or something. Gosh, I really detest that film. My list of Johnny’s films is almost flipped list of yours (I had to check from IMDb how I’ve rated everything before even reading this entry):
1.Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl
2.Cry-Baby
3.Blow
4.Finding Neverland
5.Charlie & the Chocolate Factory
The rest of these I’ve given six stars in IMDb and that basically means that is was entertaining enough but I don’t care if I see it again or not. I’m not a big fan of Burton, too goth for my taste, I guess.
*Alice in Wonderland
*Edward Scissorhands
*What’s Eating Gilbert Grape
*PotC: Dead Man’s Chest
*Sweeney Todd
And I’ve seen some others too but those I think were on the bad side.
Come to think of it, Johnny migh be a bit overrated?!
But anyway, great list again!
Thanks! : ) I think he IS a good actor but isn’t picking the right roles these days.
I barely remember Cry Baby but remember not liking it much. I should give it another try!
I loved Cry Baby when I was a teenager, I watched almost once a week. Though I haven’t seen it for a long time, so I’m not sure if it’s still good.
I know you’re going to get mad at me for this but I actually can’t stand captain pirate boy or whatever he plays. I thought that was just ridiculous. Too much. BLECH.
Happy Thursday. There’s a 50 MPH wind blowing here. How exciting!!
You suck. Lol! Not really – I can see loving or hating that character. ; ) The sequels definitely ruined the first one for me a bit. I really liked it but then the sequels were AWFUL.
I didn’t even ever finish the fourth one…
I didn’t even start it… : )
It’s tough to say, and kind of sad but Johnny Depp has always underwhelmed me. I mean I love his earlier work, Ed Wood and so on, but it’s like he’s become this niche, character actor that has tons of talent and doesn’t use it. I’m still waiting for him to find that perfect role and blow me away. Hopefully Transcendence will do the trick :). Excellent list, nonetheless!
Thanks! : ) I actually agree with what you’ve said. He’s brilliant in older stuff like Edward Scissorhands. I want to see him in a great role again – it’s been too long. : (
Great list. I’ve seen most of these. Donnie Brasco especially is brilliant.
Thanks. : ) I’d love to watch that again soon – only watched it once a long time ago.
Thought he was very good in Public Enemies as John Dillinger. Grown a bit tired of some of his more wacky roles, but loved him in Edward Scissorhands too. Great list!
Thanks! : ) I still need to watch Public Enemies…
This list reminds me of how wonderful and unique Johnny used to be, long before he got caught up in the extreme hair and makeup game. It’s like his appearance is his character in any given movie now, and that just doesn’t cut the mustard.
I know. I do agree with that. : ( Come on, Johnny – go back to playing the roles we all used to love! Or, hell, try something VERY different (as in, not at all wacky). A truly serious role would be good.
I would love a straight up serious role for him in a really powerful film, and then to see him take home some Oscar gold. If Matthew “Shirtless” McConaughey could stop being a dopey boy toy in mindless rom-coms (not that there’s anything wrong with that, but it was getting stale) and start doing awesome roles, then there’s hope for Johnny too.
I love this man! How about a top 10 worst Johnny Depp movies next…?!
Me too. : ) lol – I’m afraid I could easily make a top ten worst list with his most current films. Unfortunately. : (
Great list! I love Donnie Brasco and Ed Wood! I wrote a piece a few months ago called ‘Hurry Up, Johnny’ about his recent decline into as movie.. Check it out! http://hannahmchaffie.com/2013/04/17/hurry-up-johnny/
Thanks! They’re great films. : ) I’ll check out what you wrote!
Some great stuff in here but I’d find it very difficult to compile a Depp list. So many obscure and brilliant films. Donnie Brasco and Gilbert Grape would definitely be amongst my favourites, though
I’m glad Gilbert Grape is getting so much love from people here. : ) Thought that was fairly obscure. Feel like watching that again now – haven’t in years.
Nice! Not sure would my list would consist of, but Captain Jack, Gilbert Grape, and Glen from Nightmare on Elm Street would definitely be on there. I might also include Ichabod Crane and the Mad Hatter. And I love the inclusion of Corpse Bride! I actually like that one better than Nightmare Before Christmas…*runs and hides from the 1,785,912+ people who disagree*
Lol! I may ALMOST agree with you on Corpse Bride. It’s underrated. I thought it was a great film. : )
