My Top Ten Happy Songs

IMG_0756

I didn’t realize I had so many songs that “make me happy” until I started putting this list together. I wouldn’t say that these are songs that cheer me up, exactly, as I tend to listen to angry heavy metal when I’m down. However, when I’m already in a good mood and the sun is actually shining (rare occasion in the UK), these are my favorite “happy songs” to listen to. A lot of these are pure cheese, I know… Don’t judge me! πŸ˜‰

Counting down from ten to my number one favorite, here are My Top Ten Happy Songs:

10. TIE: Slade – Run Runaway & Matthew Wilder – Break My Stride

9. Wheatus – Teenage Dirtbag

8. Joe Jackson – Steppin’ Out

7. Electric Light Orchestra – Mr. Blue Sky

6. Kermit – The Rainbow Connection

5. Sweet – Love Is Like Oxygen

4. Hot Butter – Popcorn

3. The Cure – In Between Days

2. Supertramp – The Logical Song

1. The Clash – Train In Vain

Honorable Mentions:
Paul Simon – You Can Call Me Al
R.E.M. – It’s The End Of The World As We Know It (And I Feel Fine)
Cat Stevens – If You Want To Sing Out, Sing Out
Sugar Ray – Every Morning
Iggy Pop – Lust For Life
Kid Cudi – Pursuit Of Happiness
New Radicals – You Get What You Give
David Bowie – Magic Dance
Donovan – Sunshine Superman
New Order – Temptation

I had about a million honorable mentions – I really had to narrow it down! A special shout out to David Byrne as hearing his voice on any song always makes me happy as well.

Top Ten Lists:

I’ve had a list for ages now of just under 100 different top ten lists I’d like to do but just never seem to get around to putting the posts together. Does anyone like these top ten lists? Should I keep doing them? I was thinking of aiming to post them on Thursdays (when I have the time). They’re mostly movie-related but there are quite a few music ones as well. Sometimes it’ll just be a simple list like this one but other times I’ll explain myself (like I did with last week’s list of My Top Ten Band Names). Let me know what you think. I can’t guarantee every Thursday but I’d do my best. πŸ™‚

    • Thanks! πŸ™‚ lol – Yeah… I’ve made myself look really old with my choices! I’ve just always loved 70s & 80s music. It was definitely a good day to listen to these songs today. πŸ™‚

  1. I’m with Vinnie. I love the lists. Nice to know you are a Cure fan too. And that first picture is super amazing. That puts me in a wonderful mood straight away πŸ™‚

  2. You were born in the wrong era, I think! I remember (and cherished) many of these songs back when I was a kid … in the ’70s! πŸ™‚ I still play that Supertramp record!

    • Lol! How young do you think I am?? I mean… Um… Yeah, I’m WAY too young for all these songs! πŸ˜‰ Okay, I may be a tad young for some of them when they were first around. Like, if you literally mean “record” I never really had anything on vinyl except for a couple of Smurfs records. I do love 70s music more than any other era, I think, although I do still love the 80s music I mainly grew up with. πŸ™‚

      • I like the entire 80s for music but, yeah – prefer early & mid 80s. It was getting kind of bad in the late 80s but I think the 90s were the worst decade for music.

      • I could never get that into grunge. But Stereolab, Spiritualized, The Verve, The Sea and Cake were great bands that came out of the era. And Yo La Tengo were at their best then.

      • Yes, the ’90s had so much going on in the alternative scene. Grungre broke out into the mainstream, but there was so much more!

  3. Great list! The Logical Song is one of my favorites, too, from Roger Hodgson, Supertramp’s voice and co-founder. I have been a fan for years and was so fortunate to see Roger in concert last fall. He sounds even better today than on my Supertramp vinyls, if that’s possible. Can’t wait to see him again in November in New York. Check this out – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LHOpYmVcPT0

    • That’s great! πŸ™‚ I’m a big Supertramp fan but never seen a concert. Glad to hear from another fan! The Logical Song is great but so are a lot of their other songs. πŸ™‚

  4. A great list! I love reading other people’s top 10 lists, especially when they’re musical ones. I like being introduced to new music and it’s great to be able to do that from someone’s blog post, as they like it enough to include it πŸ™‚

  5. Interesting list. I was expecting to see more Slayer and Deicide though… πŸ˜›

That Matthew Wilder video…. dear God. if ever there was a genuine reason to have someone else front your song on TV… πŸ˜‰

    • Ha! I never knew much Slayer (except for that one on Guitar Hero. God that’s hard to play!). Liked a bit of Testament, though. But mostly stuck with Metallica & Anthrax as a teen. Bwahaha – I know… I kind of regret that I’ve now seen that Matthew Wilder video. Hadn’t seen it before looking it up for this post!

  6. Yes! Don’t stop your Top Ten’s — they’re great. I think I’ve also found that on my site I get a lot of great response to those kinds of posts.

Coming to this one in particular, some really nice choices — a lot that I’ve never even heard of but I’m always on the hunt for some new and uplifting music to jam to. I like listening to upbeat stuff while writing stuff down so this will be a big help!!!

Ditto on David Byrne, too. He’s phenomenal.

    • Yeah… You’ll have not heard of some of these because they’re so old. Like me! πŸ˜‰ YAY – a David Byrne fan! Love him. Love his voice! I’ll try to keep up the Top Ten thing. Of course, saying that, I don’t yet have one ready for this Thursday! Lol. Will try to throw something together quick. πŸ™‚

    • Indeed, I know the lyrics very well. There’s nothing I love more than depressing lyrics in happy sounding songs. The Cure were the best for that. Love the first two lines of In Between Days. Also love Mad World by Tears For Fears. Fantastic lyrics. Songs I love. They make me happy. I’m a massive pessimist.
