Oh, sweet Satan – you’ve been the inspiration for so many heavy metal bands!
Today I have not just one, not 666, but TWO Top Ten lists! One for each Devil horn!
\m/(>_<)\m/
When I started making this list, I only had Satan in mind. Then I thought “I think songs with the word Hell in the title can be included as well”. Turns out there are way too many to narrow it down to ten that way so I have one list of songs with “Devil” in the title and one for those with “Hell” in the title. (Although my number one doesn’t actually have “Devil” in the title but I do like to play by my own rules). 😉
As always, these are ranked according to how much I like the song.
Let’s start with My Top Ten Devil Songs:
10. Billy Talent – Devil In A Midnight Mass
9. Devil’s Spoke by Laura Marling
8. Devils Haircut by Beck
7. Devil Inside by INXS
6. Christmas With The Devil by Spinal Tap
5. The Devil Went Down To Georgia by The Charlie Daniels Band
4. Runnin’ With The Devil by Van Halen
3. Shout At The Devil by Mötley Crüe
2. Sympathy For The Devil by The Rolling Stones
1. The Number of the Beast by Iron Maiden
Honorable Devil Mentions:
– Devil’s Child by Judas Priest
– (You’re The) Devil In Disguise by Elvis Presley
– Devil Gate Drive by Suzi Quatro
– Devil With A Blue Dress On by Mitch Ryder And The Detroit Wheels
– Devil Woman by Cliff Richard
– Goddamn Devil by Ugly Kid Joe (Ha! Remember them? I’d forgotten about this song…)
– Grab The Devil By The Horns & Fuck Him Up The Ass by Sum 41 (it’s a title that I had to include)
Now it’s time to go to HELL… Here are My Top Ten Hell Songs:
10. TIE: Hell by Squirrel Nut Zippers & Hell by Foo Fighters
9. Catch Hell Blues by The White Stripes
8. Bat Out Of Hell by Meat Loaf
7. Run Like Hell by Pink Floyd
6. Green Hell by Misfits
5. Cowboys From Hell by Pantera
4. Straight To Hell by The Clash
3. Hell Bent For Leather by Judas Priest
2. Heaven And Hell by Black Sabbath
1. Highway To Hell by AC/DC (and Hells Bells, too!)
Honorable Hell Mentions:
– Go To Hell by Megadeth
– Hell Hole by Spinal Tap
– The Hell Song & Welcome To Hell by Sum 41 (what’s with them and Hell & Devil songs??)
Also, an honorable mention in general to Tenacious D’s Tribute since it’s about the Devil. Plus, Dave Grohl is the coolest Satan ever.
Here’s a quick thanks to Hard Ticket To Home Video’s Brian for recommending Black Sabbath’s Heaven And Hell back when I did a list of My Top Ten Black Sabbath Songs. Thanks, dude – I love it! And I especially love the other one (Children Of The Grave).
And there’s one on this list that I only heard for the first time yesterday but I thought it was pretty damn good considering it’s folk! It went straight into my top ten so thanks to my husband for suggesting I listen to Devil’s Spoke by Laura Marling. Here’s the video:
Fun post!
Thanks! Was a fun one to put together. 🙂
Awesome post! I especially love the Devil Went Down to Georgia and Sympathy For the Devil.
Thanks! Yeah, I love the first one considering I hate country music. Also not a Rolling Stones fan but I do like a few songs & Sympathy is my favorite. 🙂
I’m not a fan of country music either, but that one is just epic! I just watched the video you linked and wow! Charlie Daniels hasn’t slowed down a bit has he?!
Oh. Yeah! I guess so… (I put this post together really quick so didn’t actually watch any of my YouTube links. lol! I better go check it out!) 😉
What devilish choices.
It was a hell of a lot of fun! 😉
I can imagine.
Double list, bonus! GNR’s Right Next Door to Hell would be up there for me. Good call on Tribute!
Yeah, I thought of the Guns N Roses one. Not a favorite of mine but Knockin on Heaven’s Door may be on my Heaven Songs list. 😉 Gotta love Tribute!
If you haven’t seen it, be sure to check out Primus’s stop motion video for their cover of The Devil Went Down to Georgia, it’s great.
Oh – no, I haven’t! Used to be a big Primus fan. I’ll have to check that out! 🙂
Another fun song is Weird Al’s Nature Trail to Hell in 3D
Hmm. Not heard that one! Will have to check that out too. 😉
Good stuff! Thanks for the long overdue recognition. Looks like Devil > Hell in this list. Motley Crue remains severely underrated as a kick ass bad. They should have performed under black cloaks.
They were never one of my absolute favorite bands but I think you’re right – their looks didn’t help. We’d all probably think they were way cooler now if they’d been ugly bastards like Metallica or something! Oh, and will I be required to mention you again when that song also makes my “Angel & Heaven songs” list?? 😉
Great lists, although I can not listen to Devil Went Down to Georgia one more time without ripping my own ears off my head – please don’t make me listen to that song again…lol. My list would also have: Motorhead – ‘Go to Hell’ and Alice Cooper – ‘Go to Hell’ (different songs same title). Also AC/DC – ‘Hell Ain’t a Bad Place to Be’ and of course ‘Hell’s Bells’
Aww – I like that song! (Even though country music seriously sucks) 😉 Don’t know the Alice Cooper or Motörhead but love how much AC/DC loved singing about Hell. Lol 🙂
ive heard of bat outta hell by meatloaf 🙂
Lol. WOOHOO, Rob! You rock!!! 😉
I try 😉
Awesome fun! And thanks for reminding me of Tenacious D. Loved that album. Loved that video with Grohl too. Some great songs in there. Some blasts from the past. Looks like contemporary pop music needs more Devil and Hell in their titles 😉
Thanks! I had a hell of a fun time putting this list together. 😉 I was such a huge fan of that Tenacious D album. Loved it! Yes, we need more Devil & Hell in pop songs. Taylor Swift needs to sort something out! 🙂
Hahaha.. that Swift comment. I can picture the video now
I highly approve of your #1 song in the first list. A true classic. But…. but… how could you not include a Slayer song?? Sacrilege I say!!! 😛
Iron Maiden rules. Best band EVER!!!! 🙂 As for Slayer, I never really explored their stuff for some reason. But I had nothing against the properly HEAVY shit like that. 🙂
Hehehe, Slayer have a song called Angel of Death, perfect for your list!! Or Hell Awaits ;D
And hell yeah, Iron Maiden RULE!!! \m/
Well, maybe I’ll finally check out some Slayer… 😉
Oooo do and let me know what you think! You can go for their most abrasive which is probably Reign In Blood, or you could listen to and album that isn’t so…. fast and relentless.
Have a listen mate:
:D:D
Oh – I think that’s the one I’ve played on Guitar Hero! Lol 😉
Haha!! Slayer made it onto Guitar Hero, that is awesome
Damn hard to play, though. 😉
As it should be hehe
Have you seen the movie Sympathy for the Devil? Jean-Luc Godard (love that film. not big on narrative but great. reminds me of Richard Lester’s The Knack …and How to Get It) But my favorite Devil song would have to be Van Halen’s Running with the… The opening of that song still makes my hairs stand on end) “I live my life like there’s no tomorrow.” Hell songs I’m not so excited about. Even Highway to Hell is one of the most boring AC/DC songs ever (and I love Bon Scott RIP I always pour out a little Jack Daniels for Bon) Straight to Hell by Clash is great but I think my favorite Hell song would have to be Pat Benatar’s Hell is for Children. (painful as it is). Nice post. Ooh… do Heaven next.
No, I’ve not seen that. Or heard of it! I just looked it up & it sounds really interesting! Aww – I love Highway To Hell. 🙂 Although it’s probably not my favorite AC/DC song. Hmm… I wonder what is… I should do an AC/DC top ten! I know of the Pat Benatar song but don’t know it that well. And, yes, my Top Ten Angel & Heaven Songs list is already under way. I was thinking of posting it before Christmas. 😉
I’d like to suggest Heaven Must Be Missing An Angel by Tavares. Satisfies both lists and it rocks. Plus it was used to perfection in the Charlie’s Angels movie. Can’t wait for that list. (Though I would have thought Heaven and God would be the antithesis of this list plus there are a bunch of good God songs) I’m gonna do my own music post and shut the hell up.
Oh, that one is already on my potential list. 😉 lol – well… I might change it to God but there are more Angel songs. I’ll decide once I’ve thought about it more – it’ll depend on whether the God or the Angel songs are better. I’m thinking the Angel ones will be. 😉
You’re probably right.
You got ’em covered. I will add these three:
Lucifer Sam-Pink Floyd
Little Demon-Screamin’ Jay Hawkins
Along Came The Devil one Night-Scrimshire
I don’t know those! Lol. And not heard of the last band. You do like Pink Floyd… 😉
What awesome picks! I would want to add Loverman by Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds. It doesn’t have devil or hell in the title but it’s about the devil.
Thanks, Abbi! 🙂 Well, I’d say no to that but I’d be a hypocrite after making The Number Of The Beast my number one… 😉 lol
Reading your post all I could think was “Jesus Christ” …. 😛
Ha! That’s Jesus H. Christ to you… 😉 I’d do Jesus songs next but, let’s face it, they’re nowhere near as cool as Devil & Hell songs. 🙂
You’re actually really cool! If our relationship is meant to last I need to upgrade my cool factor.
Love your selection (apart from Van Halen and Motley Crue) – AC/DC and Iron Maiden had to be number one!
Thanks! Love my Iron Maiden. 😉 But your cool factor is so damn low that it would just be too much work to upgrade you. You’ll never be cool enough for me! (Unless you’ve watched Hardware by now?) 😉
