My Top Ten Matt Damon Movies

As I’ve finally now seen The Martian, which has earned him a Best Actor Oscar nomination, I thought it was time to do My Top Ten Matt Damon Movies.

Holy hell, when did Matt Damon make so many movies?! I sometimes struggle to scrape together ten movies that I’ve seen for these actor lists but I’ve seen 22 Damon Films (counting the Bournes as one & not counting Field Of Dreams, in which he apparently had an uncredited role as “baseball fan at Fenway Park”. really??).

I’d never have called Matt Damon a favorite actor of mine but I like him just fine. To be honest, I can’t say I’ve ever really noticed him that much (which is why I was surprised when I looked him up & he was listed as being in 74 things). I was happy for the Damon/Affleck Oscar win for Good Will Hunting and how young, dumb, and full of… enthusiasm they were! Look at them accepting their Best Original Screenplay Oscar – they were so sweet:

I have to say I’ve always preferred Matt Damon to Ben Affleck, though. There’s something shifty about that guy! But their relationship has lasted longer than most Hollywood marriages so that’s pretty cool.

There are several Damon movies that I saw but just don’t remember that well (hey – I’m old & I’ve watched a lot of movies). I’ll list them all at the end so you know why they aren’t included. The one I really must admit to not remembering all that much of is Saving Private Ryan. So, I’ve given it an honorable mention to hopefully avoid a riot. I pissed people off enough as it was when I left it out of My Top Ten Steven Spielberg Movies. I promise that if I ever re-watch it & think it deserves to be in the ten, I’ll update this list. Yes, I’ve put cameos and super tiny roles above Private Ryan. Sorry! 😉

So here are My Top Ten Matt Damon Movies (not performances) counting down to my favorite:

Honorable Mention (because it’s a worthy war movie & Steven Spielberg rules but I barely remember the film. I hope he got saved!):

Saving Private Ryan

Top Ten:

10. The Bourne Films

9. The Zero Theorem

8. Dogma

7. Mystic Pizza

6. Chasing Amy

5. Ocean’s Eleven

4. The Martian

3. Good Will Hunting

2. The Departed

1. The Adjustment Bureau

The Ones That Didn’t Make The Cut:
Interstellar
Elysium
Contagion
The Majestic
Jersey Girl

The Ones I’d Need To Re-Watch Before I Could Really Include Them In A List:
The Talented Mr Ripley
Courage Under Fire
Rounders
Confessions Of A Dangerous Mind
Hereafter
School Ties

And who doesn’t say “Matt Damon” in this way now whenever they hear his name? He must get sick of people probably still doing that to him. But he apparently found this hilarious because Matt Damon seems like he’s just so damn nice. 🙂

  1. Haha, LOVE that you included that bit at the end lol. We were only just talking about that the other day and saying it and agreeing that EVERYONE must say it when they see him “Maaatt Daaaamon” and we were wondering if he got fed up with it too! Nice to hear he found it funny, that makes me like him very much 🙂

Nice list!!!! The Departed and Dogma my personal faves!

    • Hehe. I couldn’t do a Matt Damon post without the Team America clip. 😉 Agreed – it’s awesome he has a sense of humor over it! Tom Cruise or someone like that would have sued them. Thanks – I really could do with watching Dogma again but The Departed really was awesome. 🙂

      • Funny you should say that I’m sure Tom Cruise tried to sue South Park over the fudge packer episode ha ha ha. It’s so GREAT when celebrities/actors are nice and down to earth and have a sense of humour etc.

I love the big in Dogma when Matt Damon starts going “Who’s house, Run’s house” I’m sure he improvised it!! Right after he killed everyone on the Greyhound bus lol.

        Ah, The Departed. AMAZING!!!!!! 😀

  2. You are still going to have a riot on your hands xD Saving Private Ryan is a freaking brilliant movie. I am a big fan of Matt Damon, so naturally, love your list 🙂

Dogma is such an under-appreciated film.

    • Hehe. I just really don’t remember a thing about Saving Private Ryan now. It just didn’t stick with me, I guess! 😉 Dogma is another I could do with re-watching again (although I remember that one much more). Matt Damon is quite “safe” so can feel a little boring but I like him. He seems nice. 🙂

  3. I like Matt Damon quite a bit, but it would be hard to pick my *favorite* performance of his. I’d probably have to go with The Martian because I loved the book so much and Watney is so fun. Great list!

    • Thanks! As far as performances, I’d probably go with The Martian as well. I think it was one of his more dramatic roles & he did a really good job with it. I’m happy he’s up for an Oscar. 🙂

    • Lol. I knew I wasn’t the only one to only ever hear his name that way in my head now! 🙂 Thanks! I’m glad you don’t totally disapprove of my number one in the same way you felt about The Beach on my DiCaprio list?? 😉

  4. Great idea for a list! I haven’t seen Saving Private Ryan but given how gory it is, I don’t think I can handle it. I think my fave Damon role will always be Bourne. But I REALLY like The Martian so that’d be my #2, followed by Good Will Hunting.

    • Thanks! I honestly can’t remember how violent Saving Private Ryan was – I tend to be a wuss about that, though! I do like Bourne as a role – probably more than the movies themselves. And he was great in The Martian – glad he’s up for an Oscar. 🙂

  5. He was particularly outstanding in “The Departed”………such conniving brilliance! Great role in a great, great film!
He did very well in an oldie I saw the other day……………”Courage Under Fire”.

    • Agreed – he was good in The Departed. I keep meaning to watch the original of that! Great film. I did see Courage Under Fire but it was years ago & I really can’t remember it now. 🙂

  6. Loved the list. He really has done a lot of things. But here is what’s funny, The Adjustment Bureau was one of my biggest disappointments of the last few years.

  7. ha! Adjustment Bureau number one?! I forgot about that one, but then seeing it top your list threw me back to seeing it on my own in theaters and liking it quite a bit. It’s a great love story if it’s not a guilty pleasure.

  8. Ah Team America! Excellent stuff 😀 Love Matt Damon! Saving Private Ryan was brilliant and intense for me. I obviously need to watch a whole lot more of Matt Damon movies though 🙂

    • Hehe. I’m glad I included that Team America clip! Apparently everyone thinks of that when they hear Matt Damon’s name. 😉 Yes, you should check out more of his stuff if you love him! He’s good in everything. 🙂
