  3. So, I think I started following you on twitter because of the parrot. Love the play on words, and we have a parrot in our film so it seemed like a natural fit. I’ve enjoyed getting to know you through your opinionated and personal reviews. It’s really refreshing to have someone admit their own prejudices (against certain actors) or gaps in their knowledge (if you want to learn about WW2, BBC started the World at War series again this afternoon, so set your recorder or find it on iPlayer. It’s a sober and fascinating history lesson with great narration from Laurence Olivier.) I also love the occasional rants and “yadda-yadda’s”. Anyways, looking through your list, I noticed that you hadn’t seen “Common People” last year. It’s a British feature film which I wrote and co-directed. And the story loosely revolves around a lost parrot on a London common. It was in consideration for BAFTA’s and last week Stephen Fry wrote (and tweeted to his 8.5 million followers) that, “Common People is a rare gem, the kind that makes you thrilled to have discovered it. With no real expectations I started to watch this wonderful film, expecting a gentle reflective hour and a half – but “Common People” is so much more than that. With beautiful performances and a quiet firmness it pushes you to an understanding of human motive and love that is intensely moving and highly rewarding. I recommend this so highly.” Personally, I think he might be setting the bar (and expectations) a little high there. It’s a small film which we shot for £35,000 in 12 days. It was supposed to be 18 days, but it’s all set outdoors and we shot it during, “the wettest April since records began,” so sacrifices had to be made. As a result, it’s a little slow and clunky at times, but frankly it’s a miracle we got it in the can at all. Some people have really taken it to heart though, while others seem to absolutely hate it. For the most part however, in spite of our modest success, no-one has really even heard of it. Our greatest champions have been internet reviewers and bloggers like yourself who have watched the film and recommended it to their followers. So, I’m writing to you to let you know it’s out there. If you watch it and like it, well, you know tell your friends… yadda-yadda blah blah… Right, I think it’s finally time to download Boyhood. I too love Dazed and Confused and the Before films (and Common People is very talky!) so I really should have seen this by now. Thank you (and your husband) for tempering my expectations. Here’s hoping 2015 is a great year for life-changing cinema.

    • Wow – thank you for the lovely comment! 🙂 Sorry for the late reply – I fell behind on my blog comments & missed yours! Lol – yeah… I’m a little opinionated (and know nothing about WWII. Or WWI. Or WWIII (was there a III??). 😉 You have me intrigued plus getting Stephen Fry’s approval is awesome! I’ve had a look & see that your movie is available on iTunes – I’ll do my best to give it a watch soon! 🙂 And have you seen Boyhood yet? I think it’s a shame it didn’t get more Oscars but I’m very happy for Arquette’s win.

  4. Yes I did watch Boyhood. And it was, by far, my favourite film of the year. Thank you, as anticipated, for tempering my expectations, so much so that in the end, I think I enjoyed the film even more than you did! Since I went in expecting it to be long and slow, I actually found that the time flew by, and it was much funnier and more thought-provoking than I’d anticipated. I just loved the subtlety of it. The way in spite of the unprecedented “high concept” Mr. Linklater never shows off. He just keeps it moving forward, mapping the changes. I guess my feelings about the whole film can be summed up by my reaction to the last shot, when I emitted a completely involuntary yelp of delight. (Spoiler Alert?) He’s on top of a mountain, a little high with new friends, and an amazing view. He’s flirting with a girl, will they, won’t they, the looks go back and forth. It’s fun, and tingling with nervous anticipation for… who knows what the future holds. Wow.

    • Wow – I’m happy to hear that you felt that way about Boyhood! I love when a film can make you feel like that. I feel that way about several films (such as Cinema Paradiso, which is why I named my blog after it). The final scene of that is so beautiful. I don’t really understand the hatred for Boyhood – I thought it was pretty moving. I also loved that final scene. 🙂
