My Top Ten 1970-1999 Horror Movies

Oh man – this was a hard list to do since the majority of my favorite horrors are from the ’70s & ’80s. I’ll also have watched shitloads, so am sure I’ve forgotten to add some great ones & I’ll be annoyed I forgot them. Oh well – I can update the list if so!

Some Rules/Notes:

1. I’ve had to make this a Top Forty, and even then I’m missing some favorites. So I have some “honorable mentions” listed at the end. And the ’80s especially was the decade for “franchises” but it’s too hard to rank every single sequel in those cases plus I see each series as a whole. So, where I mention some, I kind of mean the series. I’ve only listed some specific sequels if any were actually really good (Dream Warriors!). And, let’s face it, the first movie is usually a million times better than the rest (Halloween! Almost wish it was a standalone film…).

2. Also, in order to do this, I’ve decided to leave a few films out that I love/really like but I don’t see as “horror” films…

– Alien/Aliens (Two of my all-time favorite films. I don’t think “horror” with these – I think sci-fi)
– Jaws (Again, I just think “action thriller”)
– They Live & Hardware (Sci-fi)
– The Crow (I’m not really sure what genre this one is but I adore this film)
– Blade (See it more as a comic book movie)
– Ghostbusters (Not horror to me – just comedy)

3. And I’ve added horror comedies into this list. I used to keep them separate (I did a list HERE). But… I figure they’re still horror as well. So some of these, including my second favorite, aren’t scary horror.

4. Finally, I’ll just add this (Is anyone actually reading my long & rambling intros?!): This list is absolutely ridiculous. There used to be a blogger I really liked who told me off one day for all the “ties” on my lists & that I need to number them differently if there are ties & I can’t have more than ten in a top ten. And I was all “My blog, my rules!”. He was awesome, though, and I’m really sad he completely disappeared. Anyway – he’d have a meltdown over this list. I mention 17 films in my top ten (seriously) and number 20 alone mentions 8. I admit that’s pathetic but, hey, I’m indecisive & also hate the thought of leaving anything out. Should I also admit that I go back & rearrange my old lists sometimes?! I think I have some sort of disorder. So I dedicate this list to that dude.

My Top Ten Horror Movie Scores & Soundtracks

A movie’s score and/or soundtrack of songs is extremely important to me as I think the right music can make a good movie into a great one or even a bad movie into a cult classic. When you think of the biggest Oscar films, almost all of them had award winning scores from highly respected composers. When I think of my own personal all-time favorite movies, the majority have brilliant scores that helped to suck me into that magical movie world that only the very best composers can help create. Can you imagine The Good, The Bad And The Ugly without Ennio Morricone’s amazing score??

I’m very picky when it comes to the horror genre & have loved very few horror films since the 70s & 80s. I do find it interesting that most of my all-time favorite old horrors are on this list of scores, though. It goes to show that they used to put so much more effort into these films than they do now, even down to the scores (but I do have a couple fairly current films on the list too). I think the score is even more important in horrors as the mood & atmosphere are fundamental to this genre. I don’t understand why so many modern horrors put so little effort into using a score effectively to create the right mood. Oh well – this genre is showing more promise again so maybe we’ll see a return to great horror scores.

More than anything, I love a good musical score that has been composed for a film but do also appreciate when a soundtrack of great songs, whether existing or new, are put together for a movie’s soundtrack. So my top ten will consist of scores but there are a few horror soundtracks that I really love so I didn’t want to exclude them.

My Top Ten Patricia Arquette Movies

Happy (belated) Birthday to Patricia Arquette, who turned 48 on April 8th.

I’ve always liked Patricia Arquette (and I loved her Oscar speech when she won for Boyhood!) but I’ve not seen many of her films. In fact, I started this post thinking I’d seen ten but, unfortunately, my math skills are shit & I’ve only seen nine. Oops. I must have counted Uncle Buck, which I was thinking of cheekily adding to this list as she apparently did “Additional Voices” for that. Well, to make this a Top Ten, I’ll have to include it anyway!

It’s fun (and easy) to do these actor top tens. I sometimes feel like I can’t do a list until I’ve seen ALL of someone’s work but that’s an impossible task. I don’t think I’ve seen every single movie from any one actor. So I figure, hey, I can update these lists anytime I watch a certain movie from an actor. So the next time I watch a Patricia Arquette movie, I’ll take Uncle Buck off this list. 😉 I should add that I loved her TV show Medium! But, yeah, that’s TV so won’t be included (although I have included an obscure TV movie that I saw years ago).

What on Earth is this epically, beautifully, horrible-looking movie starring Corey Haim and how have I never heard of a 1990 movie starring both Haim & Arquette?! This looks fantastically awful! I must see this shit!!! Here’s the synopsis from IMDB:

Set in an unspecified time in the future, USA has declined and become a country of violence and racial prejudice. Griffin earns his living delivering pizzas while he tries to take care of his little brother. An old friend of his, Gary Lee, is the leader of a gang with big ambitions, the Rollerboys. Gary joins them to help the police keep track of the gang.

YES! That sounds f*%#ing great!!! Here’s the back cover:

Arquette looks like some sexy clown/mime thing. I must see this. It’s not available (I already looked). Damn!! Although, it looks like I may be able to watch it in chunks on YouTube. Hmm… There’s my weekend all planned out! I’m sure Uncle Buck is still a far better movie, though. 😉

My Top Ten Nightmare On Elm Street Deaths

I’ve always loved the Nightmare On Elm Street films although I’ve never been in love with bloody slasher flicks. Give me a creepy psychological or supernatural “horror” instead and I’m happy. I liked a few slashers in the fake-looking gore of my beloved Eighties but I stay the hell away from gory modern day films. Gross. There was something about the Elm Street series, though, that I found fascinating from the first time I saw the first film at a party at the age of 13. Dream Warriors was my second Elm Street movie a year or so later and remains my most-watched as I recorded it off of TV & played it over & over again. I eventually watched the rest but, let’s face it, those two are by FAR the best. 

Admittedly, this top ten list is very heavy on Elm Steet 1 & 3 as those are the most special to me. And as with all my lists, this is my own personal top ten so I’m sure some won’t agree with all my choices. For the record, I’ve not included any Freddy “deaths”, only those of his victims. So here are My Top Ten Nightmare On Elm Street Deaths:

10. Ceiling Death: Part II

Victim: Julie Peyton McKenna in Wes Craven’s New Nightmare

This one probably deserves to be a bit higher but I’ve not watched New Nightmare since the night I went to it when it came out in 1994. It deserves a mention, though, for re-creating one of the original film’s most iconic scenes. 

9. Waterbed Death

Victim: Joey Crusel in A Nightmare On Elm Street 4: The Dream Master

It was only a matter of time before a waterbed was used in an Elm Street death scene! Waterbeds were weird things… Has anyone here ever had one?? Anyway, the water turning red with blood was pretty effective. And there were boobs in this scene, too! 

8. Video Game Death

Victim: Spencer Lewis in Freddy’s Dead: The Final Nightmare

I know this might not make most lists. It’s indeed one of the more “cheesy” kills but, hey – at least I’ve not included the roach motel kill! I also admit to having a soft spot for Freddy’s Dead as it’s the first Elm Street film I was able to go & see and I had a fun time seeing it with a couple of friends. And… Breckin Meyer! Someone who actually went on to do some non-horror stuff after being in a horror film! 

7. Impaled On Car’s Tail Fin Death

Victim: Donald Thompson in A Nightmare On Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors

This is the first of two Elm Street deaths that upset me. Well, upset is a strong word… Anyway, I was still young when I first watched this & I think I somehow thought that heroes from the first film would somehow survive (I’d clearly not yet watched enough slashers). This death ties in with the more obvious one that’ll be higher on the list. And… John Saxon! Did this dude love being in movies or WHAT?! (IMDB lists him as being in 201 things. Way to go, John Saxon!)

6. Television Death

Victim: Jennifer Caulfield in A Nightmare On Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors

Another cheesy but fun death and one of my favorite Elm Street lines: “Welcome to prime time, bitch!”

5. Comic Book Death

Victim: Marcus “Mark” Gray in A Nightmare On Elm Street 5: The Dream Child

Do people like this one? I have no idea but I always loved it. It also lacks gore, which is nice for a wuss like me. I suppose it totally rips off A-ha’s Take On Me video but, oh well – that video rules. 

4. Cruel Trick By Freddy Death

Victim: Nancy Thompson in A Nightmare On Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors

This one made me so mad. How could they kill off Nancy?! And to have Freddy pretend to be her dad was just cruel. 😦 😦 😦 😦 (okay, I’m over it now)

3. Sucked Into Bed Death

Victim: Glen Lantz in A Nightmare On Elm Street

Ah, my beloved Johnny Depp… I miss you, 80s & 90s Johnny Depp! Come back to us! What an awesome scene this was. Sucked into a bed! A geyser of blood! So weird but so original. And cool. 

2. Ceiling Death 

Victim: Christina “Tina” Gray in A Nightmare On Elm Street

I’ll never forget this one. Unlike a lot of Elm Street deaths in later films, which started becoming cheesy and almost played for laughs, this death was genuinely disturbing. I’ve always preferred the mood of the first film and the fact that it feels like an actual scary horror film in a way that the rest don’t. Well, I don’t need to convince anyone that the first film is by far the best – we all know that. But this was the very first slasher movie I ever watched and this death did creep me out (well, I was 13!). That’s what horror movies are meant to do, though. Yet so few manage it. 

1. Marionette Death

Victim: Phillip Anderson in A Nightmare On Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors

This one is pretty messed up. It’s also a bit gross for me but I think it’s Freddy’s most clever kill. This is the first death where I thought “Oh… That was cool”. Which is disturbing as I don’t exactly like watching people get killed! (This is why fans of only horror movies do scare me a bit). 😉 Seriously, though, who thought this scene up? Was it Frank Darabont? I’d like to think so – I’m a big fan of so much of his work. Whoever actually wrote this death is a sick & twisted genius. It still kind of grosses me out. Here you go!:

My Top Ten Horror Movie Quotes

Happy October everyone! Let’s kick off this month of horror with a top ten list of my favorite horror movie quotes. 🙂

I fully expect to have missed some with this list (I don’t re-watch horror movies to the degree that I watch favorites from other genres) but I’ve tried to pick the first quotes that popped into my head from my favorites. Oh, and I’ve never considered the Alien films or Jaws to be horror, FYI, so you won’t find “Get away from her, you bitch!” or “You’re gonna need a bigger boat” on this list. Those would top the list.

So here are my mainstream & super obvious Top Ten Horror Movie Quotes:

10. “If it’s in a word, or it’s in a look, you can’t get rid of the Babadook.”

As Heard In: The Babadook

I loved The Babadook – it was one of the very few horror films after 1989 that didn’t totally suck. Anyway, nothing is more freaky than that damn book and this is a cool rhyme (even though it doesn’t actually rhyme if you have an American accent…).

9. “The soil in a man’s heart is stonier.”

As Heard In: Pet Sematary

This is probably my only choice on this list that’s not totally predictable. I don’t know why but I had a slight obsession with this movie when it came out – it probably helped going & seeing it with a group of friends (I assume it was rated R? I actually wasn’t old enough. Hmm). Plus, one girl would shout out “PASCOW!” at school for months after seeing this. Anyway, “Sometimes dead is better” is probably the more famous line but the above quote, said by two characters, is more important to the story & the one I always liked.

8. “They’re all gonna laugh at you!”

As Heard In: Carrie

I also love “I can see your dirty pillows.” Ha! Dirty pillows! Carrie’s mom is such a nutjob. Yeah, I like my Stephen King movies…

7. “You are all my children now.”

As Heard In: A Nightmare On Elm Street Part 2: Freddy’s Revenge

Oh man, there are SO many A Nightmare On Elm Street quotes to choose from! Funny I’ve chosen one from my least favorite & least watched of the series. In fact, I was like “does he say that in number 2??”. It’s just such a well known Freddy line. I was also always fond of “Welcome to prime time, bitch!” and Nancy’s “Whatever you do… don’t fall asleep“. Well, I have another one higher on the list.

6. TIE: “One thing about living in Santa Carla I never could stomach; all the damn vampires.” & “Death by stereo!” & “My own brother, a goddamn, shit-sucking vampire!”

Dammit, there are also so many quotes in The Lost Boys! I’m also fond of saying “Maggots, Michael. You’re eating maggots.” anytime we have Chinese food. Goddamn I must be shit-sucking annoying to live with.

Well, duh. So obvious. But you all immediately knew what it was from!

I’m a sucker for rhymes or creepy lyrics to the tune of some kids’ song. “One, two, buckle my shoe” will only bring the above lyrics to mind for a generation of Freddy fans now. Or, maybe more than one generation – you young kids seem to like this one too!

3. “Heeere’s Johnny!”

As Heard In: The Shining

Again, like the Poltergeist quote, this one is super obvious. But The Shining is my favorite horror movie (along with The Omen, the Nightmare On Elm Streets & the series that my top two are a part of) so it’s naturally going to be high on my list. Guess that’s three Stephen King movies on my list (even though he hates this movie).

2. “They’re coming to get you, Barbara!”

As Heard In: Night Of The Living Dead

I love Romero’s zombie movies (yes, even Day, Land and Diary. but especially Day!). The Barbara (it’s spelled “Barbra” on IMDB but that just looks weird) line has to be the most famous Romero line & the one I quote the most by far, unlike my number one choice. But number one is just so damn cool…

1. “When there’s no more room in hell, the dead will walk the Earth.”

As Heard In: Dawn Of The Dead

Love it. I don’t find this to be a very “quotable” quote like most of those on the list but it’s just such a great line. And I also love it being said by once again by Ken Foree in the (also totally excellent) 2004 remake. I suppose it’s somewhat quotable – you could say things like “When there’s no more room in hell, the Kardashians will walk the Earth“. Or something. Nah, that doesn’t really work – someone come up with something better! Well, I love these movies & keep saying every year that I’ll review the whole lot in October but never do. Maybe next year! 😉

Question Of The Month At Oracle Of Film – Favorite Star Wars Character? & R.I.P. Wes Craven

I’ve participated in another Question Of The Month over at Oracle Of Film & I have to say this is my favorite question yet: Who Is Your Favorite Star Wars Character?

So many to choose from! Not an easy question to answer if you’re a big Star Wars fan (which I suppose I am). 🙂 Actually, no – it was pretty easy as I already knew my answer. **I don’t normally do any celebrity R.I.P. types of posts on here but I had to mention Wes Craven. I was very sad to hear of his death this morning. A Nightmare On Elm Street is one of those movies that was a very special part of my early teens when I was starting to discover that I had a love of film that kind of went beyond what my “normal” friends seemed to think of movies (I’m sure you movie bloggers can relate).

I saw it for the first time at a party at the age of 13 & it was my first proper horror. I loved it instantly. We later played spin the bottle at this party, which was fun, but while everyone else probably went home thinking about those pathetic 13-year-old kisses I was mainly thinking about how I would manage to see that “cool” movie again as it wouldn’t be one that my mom would really approve of. (We also watched Fright Night at that party, another awesome 80’s horror classic, although of course not on the same level as Elm Street. Man I miss those days, especially when it comes to horror movies. And clumsy groping.)

I’m not going to turn this into a long post or discuss Craven’s other work that I like (Such as Scream which is of course very popular but I also have a thing for Deadly Friend). I mainly just wanted to mention A Nightmare On Elm Street as that will always be an important part of this movie-life of mine.

R.I.P. Wes Craven – I’m so glad your brilliant film was my introduction to horror. Very few other horror films have been able to live up to A Nightmare On Elm Street for me in the 31 years since its release.

My Top Ten Swimming Pool Scenes In Movies

Summer is here! (I think?) I don’t know – it’s hard to tell in England! We did have a few hot days last week… Anyway! As schools are finishing all across England, that means it’s summer which means things like BBQs & pool parties! Except it’s been rainy & crap all week and no one here really has a pool as it would be pointless to have one.

This introduction is depressing me! Let’s just get on with my list, shall we? Here are My Top Ten Swimming Pool Scenes In Movies counting down to my number one… 🙂

10. TIE: A Nightmare On Elm Street 2 & 5

I love the Nightmare On Elm Street series so had to include these. Although these two films kind of suck plus I can’t ever get 4 & 5 straight in my head… I really thought the diving board one was from number 4. Oh well. Freddy Krueger is still my favorite slasher villain.

9. Almost Famous

“I am a Golden God“! Remember when Cameron Crowe made some really good movies like this and Say Anything? This is a great scene. I could probably do a top ten just of people jumping off roofs into swimming pools. Idiots. At least this ended a little better than it did for the dude in All The Boys Love Mandy Lane. Speaking of Crowe, he also wrote my number one choice in this list…

8. Caddyshack

I’m not crazy about this movie in the same way that males my age & a little older seem to be but, like when I included The Big Lebowski (even though I don’t love it) in my list of My Top Ten Carpets & Rugs In Movies, this list wouldn’t be complete without this scene. I know it would top many other people’s lists. And rightly so! It’s a classic.

7. Cocoon

Well, there’s more than one pool scene in Cocoon. I love it when the old people go swimming like little kids. I love Cocoon! Who else here loves Cocoon?? No? Just me, then?

6. Harold & Maude

Look! It’s my “please take me seriously as a movie blogger” choice! 😉 I do love Harold & Maude, though. This scene is hilarious.

5. WALL-E

WALL-E is one of my all-time favorite films so I had to include this moment when the humans realize how much they’ve been missing out in life. “I didn’t know we had a pool…”

4. It Follows

This movie just keeps going up in my estimation & I like it even more now than when I first saw it. Such a refreshing change from the loads of crappy horror films these days. I don’t want to go into this scene much as even knowing there is a pool scene in this movie is kind of a spoiler. I liked that this scene felt so much like a scene from an 80’s horror movie and I liked the naïve innocence of the teens.

3. Let The Right One In

This scene is intense! I remember going to this in the cinema and being quite stressed out during this scene. In fact, I missed the big moment here the first time around as I just couldn’t watch it. Man I’m a wuss!

2. Gremlins

Yeah! Gremlins! My Twitter buddy Zach Galligan! A movie from 1984! Those who know me won’t be surprised by something like this being so high on my list – you’ll find no Wild Things on MY list (well, my number one is filthy). This scene is obviously quite an important scene, of course, as it’s the big moment when the shit really hits the fan.

1. Fast Times At Ridgemont High

Another Phoebe Cates movie! This topped another list of mine (My Top Five Movie Scenes Of Self-Pleasure – do you like how I avoided using a dirty word there?). Well, it had to top this list as well – it’s such a famous moment. I’m surprised I’ve chosen it as I’m not normally a fan of naked boobs but you really can’t “beat” what Judge Reinhold does during this scene. Ha! (See what I did there?) 😉 *Also, Happy Birthday to Phoebe Cates who turns 52 today! I’ll pretend I knew that before this posted….*

My Top Ten Carpets & Rugs In Movies

Has anyone done a list of their top ten carpets & rugs in movies yet?? I can’t find one! Anyway – this came about as the hubby & I were discussing my number one on this list (a movie I’m pretty obsessed with). He doesn’t love it the way I do & part of my argument as to why it’s so awesome is because of THE CARPET! So….

Here are My Top Ten Carpets & Rugs In Movies:

10. The Pink Panther

The lovely Claudia Cardinale on a weird tiger-rug. Guess it’s a little more sexy than that picture of Burt Reynolds on the bearskin rug…

9. The Machinist

Super skinny Christian Bale has a super hard time with a dead body in a rug (Don’t worry – that’s not really a spoiler as it’s the opening scene).

8. American Hustle

Hey look – it’s Christian Bale again! Except this time he’s fat & and he has an even more problematic rug…

7. The Money Pit

Who doesn’t love Tom Hanks?! (Other than Abbi…). Here’s poor Tom stuck in a rug after falling through a hole in the floor of his “money pit” house.

6. Trainspotting

Ewan McGregor sinks into this rug in a drug-fuelled haze while the excellent Lou Reed song Perfect Day plays. Great scene!

5. Aladdin

Come on! You know the magic carpet from Aladdin needs to be on this list… 🙂

4. The Big Lebowski

Again – you knew this one would be on the list!

Don’t you hate it when you’re trying to get away from Freddy Krueger and your carpeted stairs suddenly turn into some sort of gooey quicksand? Poor Nancy! Still, it was probably better than getting licked by the Freddy-phone.

Chewbacca – the greatest walking-carpet-sidekick ever!

There is no other possible number one for this list. The Shining is responsible for bringing us the creepiest carpet in the history of film.

Ever since I reviewed John Carpenter’s The Ward & happened to mention the shower scene with Amber Heard, I see variations of the search term “Amber Heard shower scene” bringing someone to my blog on a daily basis. Pervs! So, screw it – I’ll make a list! Here are my top ten movie shower (or bath) scenes starting with the best:
