My Top Ten Foo Fighters Songs

Happy (early) birthday to Dave Grohl, who’s turning 48 on Saturday. Who doesn’t love Dave Grohl? If you hate Dave Grohl, we can’t be friends. I’m allowed to marry Dave Grohl, if he’ll have me. My hubby agreed to that once. What do you say, Dave??? 😉

I’ve always had a thing for talented music dudes & Grohl is one of the best. He’s consistently made brilliant music with various bands but it’s his Foo Fighters stuff that I like the most. I’ve lost touch with music in the past several years where life has gotten too busy plus I suppose I spend any free time I do get on this blog & on movies instead of music. So I admittedly only know the singles from recent albums. It was fun putting this list together, though, as I hadn’t listened to a lot of these songs in a long time. I need to get back to listening to music more often – I don’t do it enough these days. I envy people who to get to listen to music all day while they work.

It wasn’t easy to decide on the order for this list but the top two are definite and I can’t see that ever changing – I adore those songs. As for the rest, they’re all so good that I couldn’t leave them out so I’ll count down from 20. They’ve never had a bad song, which can’t be said of many bands. Oh, sweet Satan – you’ve been the inspiration for so many heavy metal bands!

Today I have not just one, not 666, but TWO Top Ten lists! One for each Devil horn!

When I started making this list, I only had Satan in mind. Then I thought “I think songs with the word Hell in the title can be included as well”. Turns out there are way too many to narrow it down to ten that way so I have one list of songs with “Devil” in the title and one for those with “Hell” in the title. (Although my number one doesn’t actually have “Devil” in the title but I do like to play by my own rules). 😉

As always, these are ranked according to how much I like the song.

My Top Ten Drummers In Movies

Ever since watching Birdman with its love it or hate it drum score (I thought it fit the film well but it got annoying) then of course Whiplash with all of its drumming, I’ve been thinking that I really need to do a list of My Top Ten Drummers In Movies. So here you go! 🙂

10. Miles Teller as Andrew in Whiplash

Well, I have to include Miles Teller since Whiplash was the inspiration for this post. I’m still not a big fan of his (he’s got a smarmy look) but Whiplash was good. Maybe I’ll change my mind about him – he’s in like a million movies coming out this year.

9. Ringo Starr in Yellow Submarine

Come on – it’s The Beatles! I had to include Ringo. I love Yellow Submarine.

8. The Wyld Stallyns “historical babe” in Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure

The redhead! Not many great pictures online. I had to include Bill & Ted – I love these guys!

7. The kid (Kevin Clark as Freddy Jones) in School Of Rock

I know that not everyone likes Jack Black but I DO and School Of Rock is one of my favorite movies in recent years. It’s great!

6. Dave Grohl in The Muppets (as Animool in Muppets tribute band “The Moopets”) & in documentary Sound City

I also HAD to find a way to include Dave Grohl. Grohl rules! He was hilarious in The Muppets but I also had to mention & link to my Sound City review again – I really enjoyed that documentary. More than anything, I think I just love how much of a music fan Dave Grohl is himself.

The film tells the story of Sound City Studios from its early days in 1969 until its closing in 2011. It then follows Dave Grohl’s purchase of the studio’s custom analog Neve console, which he moved to his personal studio, Studio 606. Famous musicians who recorded at Sound City reunite at Studio 606 for a jam session and to make an album of “all-new all-original songs, each one composed and recorded exclusively for the film within its own 24-hour session on that console.”

My Opinion:

It’s hard to review a documentary. Basically, if you like Dave Grohl and/or any of the artists listed above (and especially if you have any sort of interest in the music industry), I’d highly recommend this documentary. I mean, who doesn’t like Dave Grohl? Dave Grohl is awesome. I want to marry Dave Grohl. (But, I’m already taken. Sorry, Dave Grohl!).

Before watching this, I had watched another music documentary – Something From Nothing: The Art Of Rap (review HERE). That one was good but not very in-depth and was just a bunch of rappers showing off their rapping skills as opposed to exploring the roots of rap or anything like that (but I suppose it wasn’t called “The History Of Rap”). It was fun but a little shallow. And, I’ll admit – The music in Sound City is more my kind of thing so I was probably going to find this documentary more interesting anyway.

What I really liked more than anything about Sound City was Grohl’s infectious enthusiasm. He clearly LOVES music and what he does for a living and it really shows, making this documentary as enjoyable as the music he continues to (seemingly effortlessly) create.

Then, of course, it was great seeing interviews with and old footage of so many musical greats. The ones featured most prominently (from what I remember – I watched this months ago), were Fleetwood Mac (especially Stevie Nicks & Lindsey Buckingham), Tom Petty, and…. Rick Springfield! Yeah – remember Rick Springfield? Jessie’s Girl and all that? Well, he was a big heartthrob back in my day (sort of – the girls a few years older than me really loved him). Anyway! His story involving Sound City was really very touching and a little heartbreaking & he actually seemed a little… broken. Plus we all know about all the soap opera drama within Fleetwood Mac, which once again gets touched on in this documentary.

Many of the artists & those who worked behind the scenes at Sound City got a little emotional during the interviews & it all felt very genuine. This documentary had a lot of heart to it and Grohl’s dedication to this project really shows in the final product. Definitely worth a watch for anyone remotely interested in Grohl, the recording industry, rock music, or just a damn good documentary.
