My Top Ten 2022 Movie Releases

My Top Ten 2021 Movie Releases

Here’s my last 2021 Top Ten list. Seems a little pointless as I missed 99% of the cinema releases, so this list is pretty much only the stuff that was released to U.K. streaming services in 2021. And the majority of those were extremely disappointing. Luckily, there were several released in December that have made my top ten, so at least we got some decent ones at the very end.

I’ll actually make this one a Top 30 too since that’s what I did with yesterday’s list of older movies seen in 2021, but that list has much better movies in the lower half of it.

Here are My Top Thirty 2021 UK Movie Releases That I Saw:

Top Thirty

30. Army Of The Dead – 6.5/10
29. Cruella – 6.5/10

3. Promising Young Woman – 8/10

My Top Ten Older Release Movies Watched In 2021

Hello again! Time for my penultimate 2021 Top Ten Movies list.

This is always my favorite list each year. Doing the top U.K. releases for each year is fine but also a pain in the ass because 1) U.K. & U.S. release dates vary so much & we get a lot of movies the year after the American release date which seems to be treated as the “official” release date for some stupid reason and 2) 88.59% of current day releases are crap. Like that 88.59%?! Yes, I just made that number up.

So I try to watch some really good older films each year as well & I always end up enjoying those more overall. And I lucked out in seeing lots of really fantastic pre-2021 releases in the past year.

As always, these lists only include movies I’ve just watched for the very first time in the past year. I’ve been rewatching loads of old favorites with the family too thanks to the pandemic but I don’t do a top ten post of those. As with everything, though, I of course still ranked & rated them all here if you’re super curious (which I doubt!). That link lists absolutely every single thing I watched & read in 2021, all ranked & rated. Because I’m a sad nerd.

As I saw so many good movies, I’m listing 30. So here are My Top Thirty Older Movie Releases Seen In 2021, counting down to my Top Ten:

Top Thirty:

26. The Wolf Man (1941) – 7/10
25. Bride Of Frankenstein (1935) – 7/10
24. Seconds – 7/10
23. House On Haunted Hill – 7/10
22. Cat People (1942) – 7/10
21. Fantastic Planet (La Planète sauvage, Divoká planeta) – 7/10

Top Twenty:

20. Man On Fire – 7/10
19. The Invisible Man (2020) – 7.5/10
18. Abominable – 7.5/10
17. Frankenstein (1931) – 7.5/10
16. Trees Lounge – 7.5/10
15. The Innocents (1961) – 7.5/10

Yesterday I posted My Top Ten Books Read In 2021 & My Top Ten TV Shows Watched In 2021. Tomorrow I’ll finally be posting My Top Ten 2021 U.K. Movie Releases.

My Top Ten TV Shows Watched In 2021

Happy New Year! (again)

Here’s post 2 of my year-end top ten lists. Onto the fun movie lists starting tomorrow! But I watched more TV shows than usual in 2021 plus a lot of them were really good (better than the majority of 2021 movies).

I’m cheating on a few where I’ve not seen the full series but, with things like Yellowjackets, I kind of know where I’d rank them anyway. And these aren’t all brand new 2021 shows but there are quite a few really new ones in the list.

Here are My Top Ten TV Shows Watched In 2021 (but I’ve ranked them all, so I’ll count down to the Top Ten):

23. The Flight Attendant: S1
22. And Just Like That…: S1 So Far
21. Mare Of Easttown: S1

Top Twenty:

20. Cruel Summer
19. Nine Perfect Strangers: S1
18. Grey’s Anatomy: S17 & S18 E1-8
17. Alice In Borderland: S1
16. Chucky: S1
15. Erased
14. Children Of The Stones: S1
13. Hawkeye: S1
12. The Crown: S2, S3 & S4 E1-4
11. The White Lotus: S1

4. Yellowjackets S1 E1-7

3. Ted Lasso: S1 (not seen season 2 yet as no longer have Apple TV)

2. Cobra Kai: S3 & 4

1. Squid Game: S1

Loved Squid Game SO MUCH! And a quick mention of The Book Of Boba Fett, which I can’t really include as there’s only been one episode as I’m writing this. Hoping to love it but doubt it’ll quite live up to The Mandalorian.

Earlier I posted My Top Ten Books Read In 2021. Tomorrow I’ll be posting My Top Ten Older Movies Watched In 2021 then finally My Top Ten 2021 U.K. Movie Releases on Friday.

My Top Ten Books Read In 2021

Happy New Year! Here’s the first of my ranked lists for 2021.

Counting down to my favorite, here are My Top Ten Books Read In 2021 (Yes, way too much Stephen King this year! And 2022 will probably be nothing but Game Of Thrones as I’ve just started Book 1…)

10. The Eyes Of Darkness by Dean Koontz
9. Demon Seed by Dean Koontz
8. Unbury Carol by Josh Malerman
7. Moon by James Herbert
6. Billy Summers by Stephen King
5. Later by Stephen King
4. Rage by Stephen King (as Richard Bachman)
3. If It Bleeds by Stephen King
2. The Running Man by Stephen King (as Richard Bachman)
1. The Long Walk by Stephen King (as Richard Bachman)

I had to rank The Bachman Books separately as The Long Walk is sooo much better than Roadwork (which didn’t make my top ten).

Later I’ll be posting My Top Ten TV Shows Watched In 2021 followed by My Top Ten Older Movies Watched In 2021 tomorrow then finally My Top Ten 2021 U.K. Movie Releases. Very disappointed with the 2021 movie releases! Ugh. At least I saw some great older films for the first time in 2021…

My Top Ten 2020 Movie Releases

Hi Again. Today I’m posting my final 2020 Top Ten List.

As always, I’m going by U.K. release dates and a lot of the best released in 2020 here were 2019 in the U.S. It was also a challenge to try to figure out actual release dates this year with so many straight to streaming. I also ignore release dates if they were only at festivals at the start (who actually gets to see those?!). So I’m going by general U.K. release dates. I may have a few of these wrong. Not that it really matters…

As I saw so few, I’ll just rank all 34 that I watched. I also missed a lot that I expect would make my top ten if I’d seen them. Let me know what I should be sure to check out of those I missed.

So here are all the 2020 movies released in the U.K. that I saw, counting down to my top ten:

34-31

Possessor (big fan of his dad David Cronenberg), Swallow, The Invisible Man, The Hunt, The Lighthouse, Portrait Of A Lady On Fire, Vivarium, Fatman, VFW, Promising Young Woman, Peninsula, Relic, The Lodge, Spontaneous

Would also watch these if recommended (but could live without the Netflix ones & the thought of sitting through Mank doesn’t thrill me):

My Top Ten Older Release Movies Watched In 2020

Hi again! I see some old faces are back on the blogs again?? Yay! I’ll reply to everyone at the weekend (too busy with work on weekdays). Welcome back! 🙂

Now onto the year-end movie lists I love making every year. Today will be the best older (pre-2020) movies I watched in 2020. These are all first-time watches. I rewatched loads of movies this year thanks to lockdowns. I won’t be putting those in a list as they’re just some old favorites but you can see the full ranked list of absolutely everything I watched HERE if you’re super bored or something. I was clearly super bored as I watched way too many movies…

Tomorrow I’ll post my final list of My Top Ten Movies Released In The U.K. In 2020.

I wish it had been a better year for movies, as I don’t think anything I chose to watch will end up as an all-time favorite film. I still enjoyed some, though. But the 2020 releases were understandably very disappointing.

As I watched so many movies, I’ll actually make this a top 30. So counting down to my top ten, here are My Top 30 Pre-2020 Movies Watched In 2020.

My Top Ten TV Shows Watched In 2020

Happy New Year! (again)

Here’s day 2 of my year-end top ten lists. Onto the fun movie lists starting tomorrow! But I realised I watched more TV shows than usual in 2020 plus the top two are SO good that I decided these were worthy of a list this year even though I prefer watching movies. But I enjoyed The Mandalorian far more than any movies I’ve seen in the past several years.

I’m cheating a bit as I’ve only seen a few episodes of some of these. But, based on what I’ve seen so far, this is how I’d rank them. And god Grey’s Anatomy annoys me but I’ve been watching it for over a decade so I must like something about it. By the way – are we ever going to get to see the newest series in the U.K.??

Here are My Top Ten TV Shows Watched In 2020:

10. Watchmen

9. Locke & Key

8. The Umbrella Academy

7. TIE: The Middle & Grey’s Anatomy

6. Avatar: The Last Airbender

5. X-Men (The Animated Series)

4. The Crown

3. The Golden Girls

2. Cobra Kai

1. The Mandalorian

He’ll always be Baby Yoda to me. Love him.

Also watched:

The Masked Singer US & America’s Got Talent (hate myself for watching this crap), The Storyteller (1 episode – bizarre!!), Marvel’s Runaways (kid likes but I’m not feeling it), The Creeps (inferior Goosebumps-like show), Parks & Recreation (a few episodes – meh), Love, Death & Robots (2 episodes – hope they get better).

Yesterday I posted My Top Ten Books Read In 2020. Tomorrow I’ll be posting My Top Ten Older Movies Watched In 2020 then finally My Top Ten 2020 U.K. Movie Releases on Friday.

My Top Ten Books Read In 2020

Happy New Year! Here’s the first of my ranked lists for 2020.

14. Landline by Rainbow Rowell – 2.5/5

13. The Taking by Dean Koontz – 2.5/5

3. Final Girls by Riley Sager – 3/5

2. The Colorado Kid by Stephen King – 3.5/5

Tomorrow I’ll be posting My Top Ten TV Shows Watched In 2020 followed by My Top Ten Older Movies Watched In 2020 then finally My Top Ten 2020 U.K. Movie Releases. Very disappointed with the movies I saw in 2020! But it’s obviously been a strange year.

My Top Ten Movies Of The Decade (2010-2019)

Welcome to the last day of my 2019 top ten lists that I’ve been posting all week. The other lists are at the end of this post.

So many people did “End Of Decade” lists that I figured I better do one too. I’ve had this blog since 2012 so I already had yearly lists I could easily look at anyway since I’m a list maniac. I’ve been rating and ranking absolutely every movie I’ve watched since 2012. God I’m a nerd.

It was a good decade for movies. I had trouble narrowing it down to only 30 so I’ve added some “Honorable Mentions” at the end as I didn’t want to ignore some movies but also couldn’t quite add them to the 30. I know I like some odd movies sometimes, so felt that lesser-known films such as Space Station 76 (definitely not for everyone!), Turbo Kid & Circle deserved a mention.

So here are My Top Thirty Movies Of The Decade (2010-2019), counting down to my favorite:

Top Thirty:

30. I, Tonya
29. The Artist
28. The Frame
27. Your Name
26. The Way Way Back
25. Brave
24. Moana
23. Hugo

My Top Ten 2019 Movie Releases

Welcome to Day 5 of my 2019 top ten lists that I’ll be posting all week.

I found 2019 cinema releases to be disappointing overall. I went to a hell of a lot (thanks, Unlimited card!) and, though I very much enjoyed all 30 I’ve listed below, there were just far too many “average” movies released in 2019. Last year gave me nothing that will become an all-time favorite, which is unfortunate as a lot of recent years have given me at least 1 movie that I really loved. Speaking of which, I’ll be posting my top ten movies of the decade tomorrow. Again, I’ll cheat and make it a top 30 (like yesterday’s Top Ten Movies Watched At Home In 2019, which does contain some new favorites). I haven’t fully decided on the decade list – my top four below have potential to squeeze into the 30.

I’m not saying those below are at all bad, though. In fact, it’s a very strong 30. I’d especially recommend any in the top 20 & loved that things like Fighting With My Family & Hustlers were very pleasant surprises as I didn’t expect to enjoy them nearly as much as I did. Hell, even Child’s Play was far better than I was expecting! So 2019 was a year of some very good films, TONS of “average” films, but not too many dreadful films (or perhaps I managed to avoid those. I’ve not seen Cats!).

Here are My Top Thirty 2019 Movie Releases (by UK release date):

My Top Ten Movies Watched At Home In 2019

Welcome to Day 4 of my 2019 top ten lists that I’ll be posting all week.

I’ll post the list of my top ten movies released in 2019 tomorrow but I always prefer doing the list of older films that I watched at home each year. These movies tend to be much better (I do try to watch some worthy stuff at home). I have to say that 2019 was a very disappointing year for movie releases overall & none from 2019 made it into my top ten movies of the decade (which I’ll post on Friday). What I watched at home wasn’t quite as strong as some years but I do really love the top six or seven. I also watched A LOT of movies this year so I’ve made this a Top 30 (the full list of everything I saw in 2019 is HERE).

My 2019 Blind Spot Movies: Ranked

Welcome to Day 3 of my 2019 top ten lists that I’ll be posting all week.

I won’t have time to review any more of the below in full like I was hoping but I’ve included the links to my original posts where I talked a tiny bit about each of them (some more than others).

The only one that I reviewed in full was Deep Red & I’m glad I made the time for that as it was my favorite. I was a little disappointed with my Blind Spot choices this year but did love the Top Four. Well, I can’t exactly say I loved El Topo but watching it was certainly an experience. El Topo is the main one I’d like to review in full someday as it was quite bizarre and I’m a fan of visually appealing bizarre films. I find it far more interesting to write about odd films (like Mandy). I’d also like to quickly mention Paprika as it’s the first one I watched on 1/1/19 when I was very tired & I think I didn’t give it enough of a chance. Having already seen Inception and having seen & loved Akira, Paprika didn’t feel as original as it might have otherwise. It really is a combination of the Akira weirdness & very much the story from Inception (before Inception did the same thing in, my own personal opinion, a far more boring way than Paprika). And before I end up talking about each of these too much, I’ll just add that I loved seeing John Hurt in Midnight Express (though I’d hoped the film would be a bit better). These are all good movies, though – Only Dreamscape feels out of place as the rest are far better & that’s the only one I wouldn’t recommend.

Well, I didn’t quite manage to watch 12 Blind Spot movies in 2019 but at least I saw ten. So here are My Top Ten Blind Spot Movies Watched In 2019 (counting down to my favorite):

10. Dreamscape – 6/10

9. The Wild Bunch – 7/10

8. Paris, Texas – 7/10

7. Paprika – 7/10

6. Mississippi Burning – 7/10

5. Midnight Express – 7/10

4. El Topo – 7.5/10

3. In The Heat Of The Night – 7.5/10

2. Ip Man – 8/10

1. Deep Red (Profondo Rosso) – 8/10

My IMDb Top 250 Movies Watched In 2019

Welcome to Day 2 of my 2019 top ten lists that I’ll be posting all week.

I watched more films in the IMDb Top 250 in 2019 than I was planning, so I’m glad I’ve now worked through seeing 65 more of the 250 since starting my IMDb Top 250 Project in 2013. I think I only have about 36 left to watch now (if I’ve counted correctly). Not too bad!

I won’t have time to review any of the below in full like I was hoping but I’ve included the links to my original posts where I talked a tiny bit about each of them (some more than others). They really do deserve full reviews someday, especially the fantastic top four. There are also two I hated (the bottom two), which doesn’t happen often with the Top 250 films.

Here are My Top Ten (okay, actually 12) IMDb Top 250 Movies That I Watched In 2019 (from least favorite to favorite):

12. The Grand Budapest Hotel – 5/10

11. Oldboy (2003) – 5/10

10. 3 Idiots – 7/10

9. The Wild Bunch – 7/10

8. The Killing – 7/10

7. Touch Of Evil – 7/10

6. The 400 Blows (Les Quatre Cents Coups) – 7.5/10

5. The Hunt (Jagten) – 7.5/10

4. In The Heat Of The Night – 7.5/10

My Top Anime Movies Watched In 2019

Welcome to Day 2 of my 2019 top ten lists that I’ll be posting all week.

I watched more anime than I realized this year, although not as much as I’d have liked. I still love Studio Ghibli above all else but I’ve really enjoyed exploring more anime the past few years. Looking forward to seeing Weathering With You in the cinema later this month, which is from the same director as Your Name.

I won’t have time to review any of the below like I was hoping but I’ve included the links to my original posts where I talked a tiny bit about each of them.

Here are My Top (not quite ten) Anime Movies Watched In 2019 (counting down to my favorite):

8. A Silent Voice

7. Lu Over The Wall

6. Big Fish & Begonia

5. Ocean Waves

4. In This Corner Of The World

3. The Great Adventure Of Horus, Prince Of The Sun (aka The Little Norse Prince)

My Top Ten Books Read In 2019

Happy 2020! Here’s the first of my 2019 Top Ten Lists that I’ll be posting every day through Friday. I’ve hidden this one on Sunday since no one gives a shit about books on my movie blog. One of my resolutions this year is to read more books (and more quality ones) and to watch fewer movies (at home). Dune is the main thing I plan on reading in 2020.

I only read ten books in 2019 anyway. Here are My Top Ten Books Read In 2019 (from my least favorite to my favorite):

10. The Knife Of Never Letting Go by Patrick Ness – 2/5

9. The Goldfinch by Donna Tartt – 2.5/5

8. The Woman In The Window by A.J. Finn – 3/5

7. Shattered by Dean Koontz – 3/5

6. Elevation by Stephen King – 3/5

5. Gwendy’s Button Box by Stephen King & Richard Chizmar – 3/5

4. The Rats by James Herbert – 3/5

3. The Institute by Stephen King – 3.5/5

2. Full Throttle by Joe Hill – 3.5/5

1. ‘-All You Zombies-‘ by Robert A. Heinlein – 4/5

Should a short story be number one? Fuck it – It’s my blog so I do what I want. FYI – my number one is the story that the fantastic movie Predestination is based on. I recommend the film to sci-fi fans.

My Top Ten 2018 Movie Releases

This is my final 2018 Year End List. This one is really annoying as so many good 2017 US films got released in the UK in early 2018. But it’s a huge pain in the ass to try to adjust this list each year according to the US release dates so, once again, I’ve based this list on the UK cinema release dates.

It was an okay year for films but pretty disappointing overall. I certainly won’t have any all-time favorites from 2018 (although I think number 1 was entertaining as hell, number 2 was pretty damn fantastic & number 3 was certainly unique).

So here are My Top Ten 2018 Movie Releases (based on UK release date). Oh, and I saw a shitload so I’ll actually count down from 30. I’ve listed the rest I’ve seen at the end…

Once again, Happy New Year everyone! 🙂

My Top Ten Movies Watched At Home In 2018

My Top Ten Movies Watched At Home In 2018

Here’s my penultimate 2018 Top Ten List (I just wanted to use the word “penultimate”). This is the list I enjoy doing the most each year since I tend to watch more interesting stuff at home than whatever happens to get released in cinemas. I saw some great films at home this year (I love the Top Five). But I also watched WAY too much shit. I especially seem to watch way too many shitty horror films. I think I just keep hoping that one will actually be good but 90% of modern horror sucks so I don’t know why I keep trying. I’m going to try watching more worthy stuff this year!

As I watched so many films in 2018, I’ll make this a Top 30. Any not in the Top 30 were all pretty rubbish anyway. If you desperately want to see the full list of the 150ish (yikes!) movies that I watched in 2018, the full ranked list is HERE.

Here are My Top Ten Movies Watched At Home In 2018 (counting down from 30 but thanks to a tie it’s actually 31. God I’m annoying…)

My Top Ten Movies Of 2017

Here’s my final list of 2017: All the movies released in the UK in 2017 that I saw. As always, I’ve ranked them from my least favorite to my favorite. Remember that the UK gets all the “Oscar” stuff in January & February (so annoying), so a lot of last year’s nominees are here. Happy New Year, everyone! I hope 2018 is a good year for films other than just superhero movies. Here are My Top Ten Movies Of 2017 (starting at the bottom – I saw 37 & there’s one tie):

I watched a lot of movies at home this year (87) and I feel like these movies get ignored as people only list current releases in their year-end lists. Well, I’ll be posting My Top Ten Movies Released In 2017 tomorrow. But I always enjoy this list slightly more. Once again, I watched some true older classics at home this year.

87 movies are too many to list but I do have the full list (ranked & rated because I’m a loser!) HERE if you really want to see them all plus which ones are at the very bottom (Lifeforce & The Neon Demon, FYI). So let’s talk about the 30 best ones!
