Ten Things I Like About England

I’m American but I’ve lived in England a long time now. I complain about it too often (just ask my hubby!). But the truth is that the only thing about England that REALLY gets me down is the weather (too bad I didn’t know before moving here that I suffer massively from SAD)! So as the sun was occasionally shining through the clouds today and the sky was mostly blue and it’s a new month and I’m trying to be a more positive person and yada yada yada, I’ve decided to list “Ten Things I Like About England”. So here you go! πŸ™‚

1. The Music

Probably almost 90% of my favorites are from the UK. The Beatles, Iron Maiden, Radiohead, David Bowie, John Lydon/Sex Pistols, Black Sabbath, The Chemical Brothers, Peter Gabriel, The Clash, The Cure, The Smiths, Ian Brown/The Stone Roses, UNKLE, Massive Attack… I’ll stop there or I’ll be listing these all day…

3. Stonehenge. It’s just really cool. Spinal Tap agree.

4. WAY more days off work than in America. Hooray for bank holiday Mondays! (Like today).

5. Guns. Not many.

Won’t discuss this. Just listing it is the closest I’ll EVER get to being political about ANYTHING. I only discuss movies and light fluffy things. πŸ˜‰

My England Haiku:

Not much sunshine but
Look on the bright side of life
And bring umbrella

  1. The word ‘wanker’ is truly marvelous. Great post. I recently came back to the UK after living in California for a couple of years. I’ve found it hard to settle back in…the weather doesn’t help. Hopefully it’ll improve, Is there much about the US you miss?

    • Yikes – I’d find it really hard to adjust if I’d lived in sunny California! It really is sunshine I miss the most. Or even actual seasons instead of a year-round damp greyness. And I miss certain foods but know it’s probably a blessing to not have those here! And, of course, I’d be a total wanker if I didn’t mention missing my family. πŸ˜‰ Ha! Yes, wanker is a great word… πŸ™‚

  2. A foreign student asked me if the weather was like this all the time. I immediately laughed like a mad man because it rains 60% of the time and 39% of the time its cloudy. You’d think I was joking but I live in the North West and that is literal πŸ˜€

  3. I love that basically all of my favorite things are mentioned in this post: the Beatles, Monty Python, and days off. I guess I’m really a Brit at heart. πŸ™‚

  4. Here in NFLD we endure “RDF”: rain drizzle fog. This past winter (2013-14) was AWEFUL. But the summers have been spectacular; blue skies, breezy & temps generally in the 19-26C range. Soooo unlike the oppressive humidity in NYC. Only one problem, it’s not “cool” here. Guess you can’t have it all. πŸ˜‰
I won’t even get into the language, b’y.

    • Oh I could tolerate the horrible winters if we’d at least have nice summers to make up for it. ; ) It’s just gray & rainy all year round. Does get depressing so I try to remember the positive things too. : )
