Shorts Watched In September:

Snoopy Presents: One-Of-A-Kind Marcie – Loved this. Huge Peanuts fan so always enjoy anything Peanuts related. I’ve always thought I’m a Charlie Brown (which I am a bit). But, holy shit, I’m Marcie! Could totally relate to her introverted ways in this one. I honestly just want to blend into the crowd. She’s not a character who has ever had much focus before (which she wouldn’t want anyway!). This was fun.

Carl’s Date – Lovely. Carl is so sweet. Dug is so cute. I hope Carl got laid.

I Am Groot Season 2 Shorts – These are silly but fun. Wasn’t sure where to stick this as it’s kind of a TV series but also shorts. So I’m sticking this here!

I watch Disney shorts quite a bit, especially all the really old ones. Love them. A few I know I watched recently: Pluto Junior, Merbabies, Tick Tock Tale

BOOKS, TV, MUSIC, MISCELLANEOUS IN SEPTEMBER

TV SHOWS WATCHED

Ahsoka: S1 E4-7 – Really enjoyed this. Not nearly as good as The Mandalorian but much better than Boba Fett.

Mr. Mercedes: S1 – YES! Was SO happy to see this pop up on Disney Star as I devour every Stephen King adaptation I can get my hands on & I really liked this series of books. This first season was really good. A shame they changed the finale but can understand why (it’s been a while now but I’m guessing it was maybe after the bombing at the Ariana Grande concert so they avoided that as that’s what happens in the book?).

Took a while to get used to Holly as the actress wasn’t at all what I pictured (and at least 15 years or so too young). But she does an excellent job with her mannerisms. I’m actually in the middle of reading King’s Holly book so it’s been interesting going back & forth between her character in that book & on this show. I still absolutely love her as a character. Brendan Gleeson is great as Bill Hodges. Harry Treadaway & Jharrel Jerome are also very good as Brady & Jarome. Happy with this adaptation & choice of cast.

Arrested Development: S1 E1-2: Thought I’d check this out finally. Hasn’t grabbed me yet…

BOOKS READ

Blood Sisters by Jane Corry – Actually hated this. I don’t hate much. I feel “meh” about many things but rarely hate a movie or book. But the main character was just so unlikeable & the story had far too many coincidences and I felt weird with how the sister in the accident was portrayed (and she was really hateful too). And it’s the second book in a row that I’ve read involving a rape. No thanks. Didn’t enjoy! Couldn’t wait to finish this one. – 1/5

Currently reading Holly by Stephen King, which I’m liking a lot. Holly rules. Holly & Marcie from Peanuts! They’re me!

BLOG PLANS FOR THE COMING MONTH

Think I need a break after going movie-watching crazy…

I usually end with music I like from one of the movies I watched. This time I’ll use something from the Mr. Mercedes TV show, as they put good songs in that which really work with the vibe. I like that they used Pet Sematary by The Ramones for the King connection.

Antichrist (2009), High Life (2018) & How To Get Ahead In Advertising (1989) Reviews

Three kind of fucked-up films today…

Antichrist (2009)

Directed & Written by Lars von Trier

Starring: Willem Dafoe, Charlotte Gainsbourg

Plot Synopsis: (via Wikipedia)
It tells the story of a couple who, after the accidental death of their son, retreat to a cabin in the woods where the man experiences strange visions and the woman manifests increasingly violent sexual behavior and sadomasochism.

My Opinion:

I’m not sure I’m a Lars von Trier fan but I’ve watched quite a few of his films as I find them interesting. Like some, hate some, but never forget them. Didn’t see the point of this. The opening & dreamlike sequences were good but the end felt like nothing more than shock value. But I still prefer a memorable film to a boring one. I guess. Maybe with less mutilation…

My Rating: 6.5/10

High Life (2018)

Directed by Claire Denis

Starring: Robert Pattinson, Juliette Binoche, André Benjamin, Mia Goth, Agata Buzek, Lars Eidinger, Claire Tran, Ewan Mitchell, Gloria Obianyo, Victor Banerjee, Scarlette Lindsey, Jessie Ross

Plot Synopsis: (via Wikipedia)
The film focuses on a group of criminals sent on a space mission toward a black hole while taking part in scientific experiments.

My Opinion:

The baby was adorable. Everyone else was an asshole. I do love “people stranded in space” movies, because that’s terrifying. This started out pretty good when it was just Pattinson & the baby – it captured their isolation pretty well. Then, meh. I didn’t hate this but didn’t see the point? Just to see a fuck box or whatever they called it? And, seriously, why are people always so horny in movies??

My Rating: 6.5/10

How To Get Ahead In Advertising (1988)

Directed & Written by Bruce Robinson

Starring: Richard E. Grant, Rachel Ward, Richard Wilson

Plot Synopsis: (via IMDb)
A cynical advertising exec has a block at work leading to a meltdown. He’s hilariously out of control. Getting a big, talking boil on his shoulder doesn’t help.

My Opinion:

Always wanted to see this because I knew Richard E. Grant had a talking boil on his neck & that fucked-up body horror shit like Basket Case is right up my alley. The talking boil stuff was fun but the rest of this film is kind of a mess. And I apparently missed Sean Bean. Nice seeing Rachel Ward as I’m a big fan of The Thorn Birds (which is so NOT my type of thing usually). I’ll give it an extra half star for the boil.

My Rating: 6/10
