I’ve been meaning to do this list for a while but there are just SO many songs with colors in the title. I decided to not go overboard like when I did My Top Ten Devil & Hell Songs and spent ages making sure I hadn’t missed any favorites with “Devil” or “Hell” in the title. There are too many color songs (or colour in the UK – I wish autocorrect would stop correcting me) so I’ve not spent ages doing an exhaustive list and am sure I’ve missed a favorite that’ll have me kicking myself.
However, there are too many to narrow it down to only ten so I’ll count down from 20 to my favorite. And, okay – I have honorable mentions too. Sorry! š But I’ve still left out loads of songs. Would love to hear what other Color Songs are the favorites of fellow bloggers!
Here are My Top Ten Songs With Colors In The Title (based, of course, on how much I like the song):
My Top 20:
20. Paint It Black by The Rolling Stones
19. Red Alert by Basement Jaxx
18. Rainbow Connection by Kermit
17. Black History Month by Death From Above 1979
16. Little Black Submarines by The Black Keys
15. White Unicorn by Wolfmother
14. Blackbird by The Beatles
13. Behind Blue Eyes by The Who
12. Purple Haze by Jimi Hendrix
11. White Room by Cream
My Top Ten:
10. Back In Black by AC/DC
9. Crimson And Clover by Tommy James & The Shondells
8. Pretty In Pink by The Psychedelic Furs
7. Mr Blue Sky by Electric Light Orchestra
6. Blue Monday by New Order
4. Rainbow In The Dark by Dio
3. Red Rain by Peter Gabriel
2. Golden Years by David Bowie
1. Black Sabbath by Black Sabbath
By the way – I already had the argument with the hubby on if “Rainbow” could be included or not. As always, I won. It’s my blog, after all. š I’ll now do my best to not list 1,000 honorable mentions…
Honorable Mentions:
– Green Onions by Booker T. & The M.G.’s
– White Lines (Don’t Don’t Do It) by Grandmaster & Melle Mel
– Fool’s Gold by The Stone Roses
– Fade To Grey by Visage
– Subterranean Homesick Blues by Bob Dylan
– White Wedding by Billy Idol
– Black by Pearl Jam
– Golden Brown by The Stranglers
– Green Hell by Misfits
– Gold Lion by Yeah Yeah Yeahs
– Violet by Hole
– White Rabbit by Jefferson Airplane
– Colours by Donovan (also, Turquoise & Mellow Yellow…)
great list! I think RC should be higher even š
being a billy Joel fanatic, I would include shades of grey š
Thanks! I do love Rainbow Connection but it’s no Black Sabbath… š Joel is okay. Uncool, but okay. Lol. I only really like We Didn’t Start The Fire.
Uncool???? What’s wrong with you???
I’m cool. š
Most of the time …
What, no Lady in Red by Chris De’Burgh?! Haha š
Nice list š I looove Golden Brown, Fool’s Gold, White Wedding and Blue Monday!!!
I also love Blue Moon (The Marcels do a fab version but any version is great really) and Little Green Bag. Oh and White Christmas by The Drifters!!!
I have a soft spot for Lady in Red too. White Lines, Fade to Grey, Paint it Black and Golden Brown are all great too, which shows how competitive it is. of the ones you’ve not mentioned Yellow Submarine would be in there too. What a superb idea for a post. Bravo T9M š
Golden Brown is probably my favourite of all the tracks mentioned. Blue Moon is probably my favourite of all the tracks not mentioned š Ooh and I forgot to say Black or White by MJ – Love that song!!!! š
Haha, I’ll be singing that in my head all day now! “Lady in Reeeeeed…”
I forgot Black or White! I’m definitely doing a Gr8at on this same topic now.
I can’t wait!!!! Black or White is such a good song, it’s one of my favourite Jacko songs along with Beat It š
Brown Sugar is good too, I know Paint It Black always be a popular Stones choice but Brown Sugar is good to dance to!
My favorite Michael Jackson songs are Wanna Be Startin Somethin, Man In The Mirror, Human Nature & Don’t Stop Til You Get Enough. I’m old school. š I’ve really never been able to get into The Rolling Stones, though – I only like about three of their songs. I’m more for The Beatles. š
What about The Jackson Five, you into them at all?
I’m the opposite lol, never been a fan of The Beatles but I really like the Rolling Stones, I love their original ‘bluesy’ sound the most. Gimme Shelter and Time Is On My Side are my favourite songs š
The only song by The Beatles I reeeeally like is Come Together.
Oh yes, I like The Jackson Five as well. š And Gimme Shelter is one of the Stones songs that I like (Sympathy For The Devil is my favorite). Otherwise, they just never clicked with me…
That Michael Jackson era is after my time, you youngsters…. š
Nice try! You’re the most youthful blogger on here.
HA! Well, yeah…. I’m mentally five. š
High-five š
I do love Golden Brown! š Just heard it waaaaay too much after moving here… NO! Do NOT get Lady in Red stuck in my head! Argh!!!!!!! Lol
It always makes me think of the scene in Snatch where Tommy is crying and the gypsies are arguing whether to kill him or not!
Oh yeah…. Not seen that movie in ages so really don’t remember much of it!
No! No Lady In Red allowed on this blog!!! š Thanks, Alex! I ADORE The Beatles but actually hate Yellow Submarine so decided to go with Blackbird instead to at least have them in there… Lol
You’re too awesome to ague with T9M
Well, this is true…. š
Hahaha! NO! No Lady In Red!!!!! š Thanks, Emma! It was hard to put these in order plus I left out SO many honorable mentions. I love the honorable mentions too. And White Christmas by Bing Crosby! š
Hahaha!
Great idea for a post, I love Golden Brown.
Thanks! š I really like that one a lot – think I’ve just heard it too much…
May I just say you come up with some excellent ideas for posts.
Why, thank you Vinnie! Wait until NEXT week’s…. Lol. This one was fun. š
White Wedding definitely would have made my top ten. Excellent list!
Thank you! š I do like that one a lot as well. Very hard to narrow this list down!
Very cool list. Glad to see Red Alert made your top 20 list
Thank you! Wow – someone else who knows Basement Jaxx?! Excellent! I didn’t think anyone would know that song. I love that one. š
What a colorful post!…sorry, couldn’t resist. Great choices, I would have added ‘Knights in White Satin’ by the Moody Blues – two colors for the price of one š
Why thank you! š Yeah, that was one of many more that I had as an honorable mention but I had to trim the list down. Far too many to choose from! Also like A Whiter Shade Of Pale. š
Cool concept of a post, and some great songs on there, too. Off the top of my head, I’d include Silver, Blue and Gold by Bad Company, Black Hole Sun by Soundgarden, the Joan Jett cover of Crimson and Clover, and Don’t Stop Me Now by Queen.
Hey!! How have you been?? Not seen you around in a while. š Hahaha! Are you just a really big fan of the Queen song? š Seems like your kind of song! Black Hole Sun was originally one of many honorable mentions – I figured I had to trim the list down a little bit in order to not be TOO annoying. But it was really hard to cut so many out!
You just can’t beat Queen. It matters not whether they sing of colors.
Ha! This is true… Okay – I just searched Queen albums online to see if there were album tracks I didn’t know with colors in the titles. There are!! The March of the Black Queen, White Man & My Melancholy Blues. Damn – I don’t know those! I suck at being a Queen fan.
March of the Black Queen is an underrated EPIC. It’s a great song for people who like Bohemian Rhapsody but are now sick of it.
Oh! That sounds like my kind of thing, then. How do I not know it?? I’m gonna check it out! š
This is an awesome list, really š Fun times and great music!
Thank you! š It was fun to put together. I had to leave so many out! Far too many to choose from.
You do have it covered. No argument with your number one pick. I would add:
My Little Red Book-Love
Black Is Black-Los Bravos
Black Betty-Ramjam
She’s A Rainbow-Rolling Stones
White Punks On Dope-Tubes
Ramblin’ Rose-MC5
A Touch Of Grey-Grateful Dead
A Whiter Shade Of Pale-Procol Harum
Runnin’ Blue-Boz Scaggs
Black Magic Woman-Santana
I love when people add more to these lists! š I only had some of yours on my working list. I had: Black Betty, Touch Of Grey, Whiter Shade Of Pale & Black Magic Woman. Not sure I know the rest – I’ll have to YouTube them. š It was so hard to narrow this list down – I cut out loads!
Great list.
Thank you! Your name reminds me that I nearly added Dylan’s Tangled Up In Blue but decided to go with Subterranean Homesick Blues instead. Both are great. š
Good post! š
Glad “Yellow” by Coldplay is not on there… š but “Yellow Submarine” could have been on there instead! š
I would have select as additional titles :
Black Night – Deep Purple
Silver Machine – Hawkwind
How Blue Can You Get? – BB King
Red House – Jimi Hendrix
My White Bicycle – Nazareth/Tomorrow
White Queen (As It Began) – Queen
March Of The Black Queen – Queen
Green Circles – Small Faces
Green Tambourine – Lemon Pipers
Black Veils Of Melancholy – Status Quo
16th Century Greensleeves – Rainbow
Woman In Black – Uriah Heep
Black Cherry – Goldfrapp
Blue Suede Shows – Carl Perkins/Elvis Presley
Little Red Rooster – Howlin’ Wolf/Rolling Stones
Orange Crush – R.E.M
I think I’ll stop there… š
Coldplay isn’t allowed on my blog!!!!!!! š As for The Beatles, I love them so they’re represented by Blackbird since I actually hate Yellow Submarine. Lol. YES! I love that a couple people have added more. Of yours, I did have these on my working list: Silver Machine, Black Cherry, Blue Suede Shoes & Orange Crush. So you have loads I didn’t think of! I’ve not even heard of a lot of those but thanks for reminding me of Green Tambourine – I like that one. š
Someone else who likes Goldfrapp! Whoo! š
I do!! YAY!!! š
What’s wrong with Coldplay? I don’t really care for Yellow, but Violet Hill is a great song! I also really like “Black or White” by Michael Jackson, “Behind These Hazel Eyes” by Kelly Clarkson, “Fields of Gold” by Sting, “The Real Folk Blues” by Seatbelts, and (since you say rainbows count) both “Rainbow High” and “Rainbow Tour” from the musical Evita. Great idea for a list, by the way!
Thanks! š Hehe. Well…. I just don’t like Coldplay. š Fields Of Gold almost got an honorable mention, though! I had loads that I had to cut out to not have a huge list. Never heard of Seatbelts, though!
